“Minister Ollongren supports data experiment Helmond”

News update – July 17th, 2019

We are happy to see that the Dutch Minister Ollongren of Internal Affairs has publicly confirmed confidence and supports Brainport Smart City-project. As part of that project, UNSense is currently in the process of carrying out a feasibility study and forming a consortium to realise a residential area of 100 Homes in Helmond Brainport Smart District. Building on the principles the EU-formulated GDPR regulations and operating as a Living Lab, this real-life test environment will investigate how data can be applied to improve people’s lives in cities, all while allowing the inhabitants to take control over their own data.
The news update from Minister Ollongren follows up on questions the Dutch political party Partij van de Dieren posed in the Dutch parliament, following an article in Het Financieele Dagblad (March 16, 2019), in which Brainport Smart District was inaccurately referred to as being a project that aims to offer free living in return of data. We are pleased that our project intentions are acknowledged by the Minister of Internal Affairs. Beyond achieving operational efficiency, the living lab seeks to develop a community in which residents play a significant role in the active development of their living environment, leading to increased social cohesion and new models of community living. In this way we aim to create a neighbourhood that is healthy, on physical, social and environmental levels.
